Ideal distance between sofa and TV: how to design a balanced living room

The key to a comfortable (and well-designed) living room

When designing a living room, there's one decision that changes everything: the distance between the sofa and the television.

It's not just a matter of measurements. It defines how the space is experienced, how proportions are perceived, and most importantly, how comfortable it is in everyday life.

A well-designed living room isn't one that "fits everything"; it's one that breathes.

What is the ideal distance between a sofa and a television?

As a general reference, the recommended distance is usually between 2 and 3 times the diagonal of the TV.

But nowadays, with 4K televisions, this rule has become quite flexible.

Quick reference guide

  • 55-inch TV: between 1.7 m and 2.5 m
  • 65-inch TV: between 2 m and 2.5 m
  • 75-inch TV: between 2.3 m and 3 m

The larger the screen, the more distance you need.
The higher the resolution, the closer you can get.

The most common mistake when designing a living room

The fault is usually not in the sofa or the television.

It's in how they are placed.

Often the sofa is placed where it fits and the TV where there's a wall, without considering the relationship between the two pieces.

When the distance isn't well thought out, the living room can look cluttered or, conversely, empty and disproportionate. Visual comfort is also lost, and the room stops feeling harmonious.

How this distance influences living room design

This decision directly affects the entire setup:

  • The length of the TV unit
  • The choice of sofa, whether linear, chaise longue, or modular
  • The passage between areas, especially in open-plan living rooms
  • The feeling of spaciousness and visual balance

Good design isn't just about placing furniture. It's about making everything make sense together.

Adapting measurements to the actual space

In many current living rooms, we find elongated spaces, areas open to the dining room, and walls conditioned by windows, pillars, or radiators.

This is where adjusting the distance between the sofa and TV well is most important.

It's not about applying an exact rule, but about adapting the proportions to the actual space so that the whole looks balanced and feels comfortable.

Beyond the measurement: how you use your living room

Not all living rooms are experienced the same way.

Before defining the distance, it's worth considering:

  • Whether you watch movies or television regularly
  • Whether you're looking for a more immersive experience
  • Whether the living room is the main room in the house
  • Whether you share the space with a dining room or work area

All of this influences the final layout.

The key: visual balance and comfort

In interior design, we don't work with rigid rules. We work with balance.

That the sofa doesn't invade.
That the TV isn't lost.
That there's space between pieces.
That the space flows.

When this happens, the living room feels different: lighter, calmer, and much more pleasant to live in.
