240 cm Wooden TV Unit: The Complete Guide to Choosing Well

A 240 cm TV cabinet is one of the most defining pieces in a living room. Due to its size, its presence, and because it is usually the visual center of the room. But choosing a good wooden one—the material that ages best and provides the most warmth—is trickier than it seems: not all woods are the same, not all sizes fit in all living rooms, and the difference between a piece of furniture that lasts decades and one that swells after two years lies in details that are not always visible in a photo.

This guide covers everything you need to know before buying a 240 cm wooden TV cabinet: what measurements you need based on your TV and wall, what types of wood exist and which to choose, how assembly works, and why the modular system changes the rules of the game. At the end, you'll also find the specific configurations of the model we manufacture at Slowdeco, the Penxat 240, handmade in a carpentry workshop in Valencia.

Why 240 cm is such a good size

240 cm is not an arbitrary measurement. It's the width that comfortably allows for a TV up to 85 inches, leaving space on the sides, and at the same time offers real storage: enough drawers, doors, and shelves to organize the entire living room (remotes, consoles, cables, books, vinyl records).

To get a quick idea of the proportion: the usual recommendation is for the furniture to be wider than the TV, so that the composition looks balanced and not "mounted" on the edges. With a 240 cm cabinet, a 55, 65, or even 75-inch TV will be perfectly centered with space around it.

Television Approx. TV width Does it fit 240 cm?
55" ~123 cm Yes, with plenty of room on the sides
65" ~145 cm Yes, ideal proportion
75" ~167 cm Yes, it looks balanced
85" ~189 cm Yes, still leaves room on the sides

The measurements that really matter (and almost no one checks)

Width is the first thing we look at, but there are three more measurements that determine if a 240 cm cabinet will work in your living room:

Depth. A depth of about 40 cm is the most versatile: enough to safely support any TV with its stand and to store medium-sized objects, without obstructing traffic in smaller living rooms. Less than 30 cm starts to be tight for wide stands; more than 45 cm can be intrusive.

Height of the cabinet body. Around 40 cm body height is ideal for the screen to be at eye level when you're sitting on the sofa. A cabinet that's too high forces you to look up; too low, down.

Total height with support. Here's the overlooked detail: if the cabinet rests on legs, the total height increases. For example, a 40 cm body on steel legs can result in a total height of around 54-55 cm. This difference matters for calculating the line of sight relative to your sofa.

Types of wood: what to choose and why

This is where a good piece of furniture separates from a mediocre one, and where buyers are most often misled. It's important to distinguish two things:

Solid wood vs. natural wood veneered board. Solid wood is a solid piece from the tree; it's beautiful but expensive, heavy, and more sensitive to changes in humidity (it can crack or warp). A natural wood veneered board uses a stable, high-quality board base covered with a layer (veneer) of real wood—for example, ash. The result: the beauty and feel of authentic wood, but with much greater stability against humidity and the heat of a living room, and without the premium price of solid wood. For a large 240 cm cabinet, natural wood veneer is, for most living rooms, the most sensible option.

Beware of the "wood effect". Many inexpensive cabinets use melamine or vinyl with a printed pattern that imitates wood. It's not wood: it's plastic with a wood photograph. It can be distinguished by touch (it's smooth and cold) and especially by how it ages (it flakes at the edges). If you are looking for a real wooden cabinet, make sure the description says "natural wood veneer" or "solid wood", not just "wood finish".

The three most common ash finishes

Ash is one of the most prized woods for furniture due to its pronounced grain and resistance. Depending on the stain applied, the character of the piece changes completely:

  • Nordic natural: highlights the light, soft grains of ash. Provides a contemporary and bright style, ideal for modern and minimalist spaces.
  • Oak: warm and robust aesthetic, with golden tones. Adds a classic and cozy touch to any environment.
  • Walnut: darker, richer tones, with a sophisticated character. It is the usual choice for high-end furniture due to its elegance.

FSC® certification: what it means and why to look for it

If you care where the wood comes from, look for the FSC® label. It is an international seal that guarantees that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests, protecting biodiversity and contributing to the fight against deforestation and climate change. Not all wooden furniture has it; a manufacturer offering it is a sign that they know the origin of their raw material.

Modular vs. fixed piece: the big difference

A traditional TV cabinet comes with a fixed configuration: the drawers and doors it has are all there are. A modular system starts from independent modules—for example, 80 cm wide bodies—that are combined to reach 240 cm, and within each one you choose what you want: drawers, hinged doors, or open space.

The advantage is twofold. First, you adapt the storage to what you actually keep (more drawers if you have many remotes and cables, more open space if you want to display items). Second, the furniture adjusts to your living room and your style instead of the other way around. For a large size like 240 cm, modularity is what turns "a piece of furniture" into "your furniture".

Quality details that make a difference

Beyond the wood, there are finishes that distinguish a well-designed piece of furniture:

  • Push Open mechanism: a mechanism that opens drawers and doors by pressing, without the need for handles. In addition to being convenient, it creates a cleaner and more minimalist aesthetic, with no visible hardware.
  • Cable hole: a small but crucial detail so that the TV and devices are connected without a tangled mess of cables.
  • Sliding interior shelves: facilitate access to what you store and organize the interior.
  • Leveling feet (for floor-standing furniture): allow the furniture to be adjusted to floors that are not perfectly level, which is more common than it seems.

Floor-standing or wall-mounted

A 240 cm cabinet allows for two installation methods, and each changes the result:

  • Supported on legs (e.g., steel): lifts the furniture off the floor, provides visual lightness, and makes cleaning underneath easier. The total height increases.
  • Wall-mounted: leaves the floor clear under the furniture, which visually expands the living room and is a very clean option. Requires a sturdy wall for anchoring.

Frequently asked questions about 240 cm TV cabinets

What TV fits in a 240 cm cabinet? From 55 to 85 inches will be well-centered with space on the sides. The recommendation is for the cabinet to be wider than the TV, and with 240 cm, this holds true even for large screens.

What depth does a TV cabinet need? Around 40 cm is the most versatile: it securely supports any stand and stores medium-sized objects without obstructing traffic.

Is solid wood or veneered wood better? For a large living room cabinet, natural wood veneered board is usually the best decision: it offers the beauty of real wood with much greater stability against humidity and heat, and without the premium price of solid wood.

Is it better floor-standing or wall-mounted? Wall-mounted visually expands the living room and leaves the floor clear; supported on legs provides lightness and makes cleaning easier. It depends on the condition of your wall and the effect you are looking for.

How long does it take to arrive and is it difficult to assemble? In the case of the Penxat, it arrives factory-assembled, with only the top and support needing to be attached, so assembly is simple.
